Zone Technique
The Zone Technique is a chiropractic healing method which uses biomechanical and neurological input to restore health by improving the brain’s communication with the six zones of the body. Originally created by Dr. Therman Fleet in 1931, he taught the following:
HERE ARE THE SIX ZONES OF THE HUMAN BODY:
The brain has six centers which connect to corresponding zones in the body:
-
Increase memory, energy, sleep, and relaxation
Regulate immune system and hormonal system
Thyroid, pineal, and pituitary gland care
Appetite regulation
-
Strengthen lung, kidney, and bladder function
Regulate colon & bowel movements
Clear sinuses, nasal passages, and bronchial tubes
Eliminate bloating and bodily toxins
-
Improve mood
Improve sleep
Eye and ear health
Balance the hormonal system
Increase energy, remain calm and relaxed
-
Normalize weight
Salivary gland health / normalize sense of taste
Sustain healthy liver, intestines, and gall bladder
Digest foods that were previously agitating
Boost energy
-
Restore proper range of motion and movement
Expedite muscle recovery and improve strength
Improve suppleness and flexibility
Restore center of gravity / eliminate dizziness
-
Heart health
Normalize blood pressure
Healthy blood vessels
Proper circulation
Here is how the Zones work:
According to Dr. Fleet, the human brain is composed of many centers.
These centers form in the embryonic stage of life and develop from the dorso-medial ectoderm of the embryo. There is a center which controls the glands of the body, a center which is associated with the organs of elimination, a center which regulates the central nervous system, and which is differentiated as an ectodermal neural plate in the dorso-medial region of the ectoderm.
The digestive organs are regulated by a brain center. In the motor cortex of the brain we find a center which controls all of the muscles of the body, and in the caudate nuclei (both), we find the center which regulates the flow of fluids (circulation) through the body.
Because the body may be properly classified as an ELECTRICAL MACHINE, these 6 brain centers represent the POSITIVE POLE of the body, and specific related points in the spinal cord represent the NEGATIVE POLE of the body. When there is a disturbance in any of the bodily areas, one or more of these centers are “shorted out."
There has been a disruption of normal function of the entire center due to the effect of emotional, physical, or chemical stress.
The doctor examines the patient to determine which of the brain centers are not in harmony with the systems they control. This is done by the doctor feeling specific points on the patient’s head.
These points are related to the six brain centers by nerve connections. When a brain center is not sending the proper signals to its system, all bodily material associated with that system suffers. In order to correct this, the doctor stimulates specific points in the spinal cord.
There are six sets of four points in the spinal cord (negative pole) that are related to the six brain centers (positive pole). Stimulation of the proper points by the doctor sends healing energy up the spinal cord to the brain centers that need balancing.
The balanced brain centers then are able to send out the proper signals to the body’s systems and the body is better able to heal itself.
Zone 1 The Glandular System
The glandular center in the brain controls all of the glands in the body which include the thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive organs, among others. Any trauma, disease or strain in the glands will cause a reaction along the nerves to the brain. If the strain is large enough, it can cause a block in regular nerve energy and result in overactive or under-active glands. Balancing the glandular system can improve energy levels, depression, focus, reproductive functions, and the immune system.
Glands of the head
Pineal, Pituitary, Memory, Energy, Skin, Hair
Glands of the stomach
Thyroid gland
Mammary Glands
Adrenals
Glands of the kidney region
Glands of digestion, Pancreas, Liver, Appetite, Sleep, Elimination
Glands of the pelvis, Uterus and Ovaries or Prostate and Gonads
Kidneys
Relaxation, Outlook on life, Temper, Concentration
Immune System, Hormonal System
Zone 2 The Eliminative System
The eliminative zone is composed of organs that remove waste from the body including the sinuses, urinary tract, skin, bowels, and lungs. If the eliminative zone is balanced, excretion is restored to normal levels. Conditions that can be treated by healing the eliminative systems include allergies, asthma, constipation, bladder issues, skin conditions and sinus problems.
Sinuses, Mucus elimination
Nasal passage
Throat, Nose, Bronchial tubes
Lungs
Kidneys
Bladder
Urination
Small intestine, Colon, Bowel movements
Skin
Toxins
Alkaline/Acid Balance
Zone 3 The Nervous System
The nervous system is controlled by the hemispheres of the cerebrum which is where our thoughts and emotions come from. The nervous system is made up of the nerve cells and fibers which connect throughout the entire body. If the zone is out of balance, there may be issues with many functions of the body including sight, hearing, the reproductive system, digestion, mood and sleep. Head trauma like concussions can also damage the nervous system. By balancing the zone, these functions may be restored so that you may have a healthy immune system and associated organs.
Nervous System
Eyes, Ears, Sense organs
Solar-plexus
Digestion
Mood, Relaxation, Sleep
Reproductive organs
Appetite, Elimination, Nerves
Immune System
Hormonal Balance
Zone 4 The Digestive System
The digestive system makes up the fourth zone and is closely linked to diet. In many cases, an unhealthy diet of preservatives and chemicals can wreak havoc on the digestive system. By balancing the zone through a proper diet, normal appetite can be restored, nutrients absorbed correctly, and food sensitivities decreased.
Liver, Appetite, Taste, Salivary Glands
Digestion
Gall Bladder
Pancreas
Elimination
Bowels, Stomach glands
Intestines
Food Assimilation
Weight
Energy
Zone 5 The Muscular System
The muscular system controls all of the muscles which also directly influence spinal alignment and nerve connection. If there is damage to the zone, balance and posture can be affected and increased muscle sensitivity or pain. Balancing this zone can restore balance, improve posture and eliminate chronic pain.
Muscles in neck region and arms
Movement
Normal feeling
Nerve life
Muscles of the chest, abdomen and back
Spinal alignment
Normal tone, ease, strength
Muscles of the pelvic region and thighs
Walking
Muscles from thighs to feet
Relaxation, Immune System
Equilibrium/Balance/Center of gravity
Zone 6 The Circulatory System
Zone 6 is the circulatory system which moves blood through the heart, arteries, veins and capillaries of the body. If the zone is malfunctioning, it can result in high or low blood pressure, varicose veins, heart problems or thyroid problems. Identifying and balancing the zone can reduce or eliminate these conditions.
Thyroid gland
Blood pressure
Heart, ease, strength
Blood vessels of back, arms, chest, abdomen, and lower extremities
Circulation
Lymph vessels
Movement of limbs
